Story Money Impact (SMI Film Society) is a non-profit organization based in Vancouver, and we are thrilled to announce that we’ve just officially become a charity! That means we can directly issue tax receipts to donors who want to support us in our charitable work.

Even in the midst of a global pandemic, our community of documentary filmmakers are working harder than ever to bring their stories of social change to light. The public’s appetite is strong for socially relevant content that can lead to genuine change in our society - and SMI is re-doubling our efforts to help those films and filmmakers achieve the biggest impact possible.

We will continue to help great documentary films about urgent issues strategically plan clear pathways to social change, and measure afterward whether we were able to move the needle. Over the past three years, we have worked with ten filmmaking teams on documentaries about climate change, food security, mental health, prisons, Indigenous land protection and more. We have created networks between private, public, not-for-profit, educational, and institutional stakeholders, and built bridges into under-served communities. We’ve raised money and in-kind resources, organized talks, screenings, and trainings, and galvanized relationships between media makers and change makers.

We do great work but it requires people and time . Your donation will allow us to continue training and working with new filmmakers to plan and execute their impact campaigns. Here are some examples of how and where your donation could be utilized:

  • $20  is a round of coffee for our awesome staff as they work hard to use film to drive change
  • $50 - technology cost for screening a film to a new audience to open their eyes and hearts to a critical social or environmental issue
  • $150 -  two hours of education for an aspiring impact producer to help them help others
  • $200 -  a month's worth of SMI phone and internet bills needed to spark connections to create a community around a film
  • $250 - a speaker’s fee for an expert or a filmmaker to sit on a post-screening panel discussion
  • $500 -  support social media to promote an event or screening
  • $1,000 - a one-hour public webinar
  • $10,000 - allows a producer to participate in 20 weeks of paid training to be an impact producer and help documentaries reach their change potential
  • $20,000 - a full impact campaign for a documentary film that can raise unprecedented awareness for social and/or environmental issues

If you have ever watched a documentary and thought, as the credits rolled, "What can I do about this issue I now care about?"

If you have ever struggled to explain the nuance of an issue that is important to you and wished you had a film that could evoke understanding in yourself or others,

If you think film can be a powerful tool for educating society, building communities, and getting the right conversations started in the right places,

...Then please donate to support our work, and share this crowdfunding link with your community! We’ve got lots to do together and we are excited to further build our programs and offerings.
