Cameras For Girls hasn't added a story.
Do you remember receiving your first camera as a kid? I got mine at age ten from my dad, and it was my most prized possession. That camera changed my life as it opened up a new way to see the world through that lens.
Whether you are a digital, film, polaroid or even phone camera user, photography has the power to transform!
PROBLEM
There's a real problem happening every day for females in Africa. They are oppressed and lack opportunities simply because there is a belief that females don't matter; thus, they are stuck, unable to move forward or even dream of achieving their goals, simply because they happen to be born a girl!
But they DO matter, and you can help us change the statistics for girls in Africa!
When females seek a job in journalism, they are unsuccessful simply because they don't own a camera or know how to use it to take photos for their stories. A requirement for females but not for males, thus increasing the gender divide and impact of poverty, mostly on females.
SOLUTION
Cameras For Girls provides skills-based photography and business training for females endeavouring to become journalists in Uganda. Through a 4-phase program coupled with a gift of a camera to keep, we empower females to tell stories that matter and equip them with skills to get a job and get paid, helping them alleviate poverty for themselves, their children and their community.
When you support a female with a camera and the training to use it, you are fulfilling that need and providing support and training to use that camera as a tool for a better life so she can secure employment. She empowers herself by learning new skills and expanding her sense of self, creativity and knowledge to reach her goals. You make the difference between a life where she struggles daily to meet her needs and a life where she controls her destiny.

Meet Miriam Najjingo from Uganda, who tells you why this training is so essential to her success.
A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY!
Your donation will help us support our African students to learn new skills, expand their networks, get full-time jobs in journalism, and escape a life of poverty. When you support our work, you help our student learn photography and empower her to find meaningful work that supports her and her family and community too!
Please see the various ways to support us this Giving Tuesday.
1 hour of mental health support - $75 Our students in Uganda are depressed and feel they have no future because they find it challenging to get work after the effects of Covid-19, affecting their overall mental health.
Your gift of just one powerful hour of mental health support will help a girl in Uganda leave depression behind, regain her energy and outlook for the future and enable her to move forward with her life. | ![]() | |
Business Consultant for 1 female $75 Our students lack the business skills and know-how to build the basics of a resume and/or Linkedin profile, which hinders their ability to get jobs.
Your gift of time with a business consultant will help give a girl a great resume and Linkedin profile to get a job. | Camera For 1 Female - $600 For a female in Africa to be a journalist, she needs a camera. Without a camera or the knowledge of how to use it, she will never be hired for a job in journalism.
Your gift of a camera not only allows a female to learn through our training, but it empowers her to learn a new skill and find paid work as a journalist. She not only supports herself but her family and community as well.
| ![]() | ![]() | Headshot For 1 Female - $100 For a female to get hired, she needs a professional headshot so her potential employer can see who they are hiring.
Your gift will hire a photographer to provide a professional headshot, boosting her confidence and enabling a female student to get a job. | 1 Student to Attend 4-day Workshop In Uganda - $750 For a female to be a journalist in Uganda, she must know how to take photos and tell stories using the camera as a tool.
Your gift will allow one student to take our 4-day workshop in Uganda, where they will learn a new skill, build the confidence to operate the camera we give them, and learn storytelling. She will be able to compete for a job in journalism with confidence in her abilities.
The cost includes a camera for one student, all her learning materials, transportation, and food during the 4-day workshop. | ![]() |
ABOUT CAMERAS FOR GIRLS
Cameras For Girls is a Canadian Charity that started in 2018 and received charitable status in September 2021. Since 2018, we have run three successful in-person workshops, taught 47 girls in Uganda and enabled 70% of our students to find paid work.
