What we do
Houselink & Mainstay Community Housing is a leader in providing housing and stability supports to over 2500 individuals in the broader community as well as tenants within 42 locations across Toronto. In addition to housing, we provide mental health and addiction supports, social recreation, a food program, supported employment and civic engagement opportunities. Participants also take part in Houselink's governance, including board membership.
Who we help
Our participants face disabilities, mental health challenges, addictions and deep poverty. They have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. You can imagine that many have difficulty leaving their homes and are severely isolated.
Our problem
Pre-pandemic, our kitchens hosted meals where people could come together for food and much needed socialization. Many participants struggle to buy food on limited incomes and lack life skills to prepare nutritious meals. They live with food insecurity on a daily basis.
Through the pandemic, staff have been delivering meals to the most vulnerable -- ensuring food security, providing wellness checks and some socialization. For people dealing with mental health issues and addictions, a regular meal can be profoundly stabilizing. As restrictions lift, we will be implementing programs to assist tenants and participants to leave their homes and meet for weekly meals.

Meal delivery and client contacts have increased by almost 150% during this pandemic. Moving congregate dining programs to food delivery is costly. Our participants are alone, vulnerable and incredibly isolated. Good food helps!
