Why is a pet food bank offering spay and neuter sponsorships?

Sometimes prevention is the most meaningful and long-lasting support.

We work hard to keep people and pets together through crisis. Sometimes this means help with food or veterinary support, but sometimes it is more complicated. Sometimes the most meaningful support is prevention, in order that a bigger crisis doesn't happen (such as an unplanned litter in the middle of an already tough situation).

We also understand that times are increasingly difficult for families to provide for their companion animals. There is an affordable housing crisis, and most housing is not pet-friendly. This means there are not enough homes for all the kittens and puppies being born, and older animals being rehomed. And worse, s helters and rescues are overfull and often unable to accept surrenders. While we help with pet food for current needs, we must ensure we also help manage  long-term needs, by way of prevention. 

In January of 2024, with the support of some amazing donors and partner veterinarians, we set a goal to provide 100 Spay and Neuter Sponsorships in our community of Kamloops, BC. We completed that goal by August 21st, less than eight full months into the calendar year.

Using the population growth calculator provided by The Cat House on the Kings.com, a conservative estimate indicates that the 28 feline spays prevented significant numbers:

Every animal we spay and neuter also receives vaccinations, deworming and a microchip.
