Our organization works to help keep people and their companion animals together through crisis - be that a wide scale crisis such as a wildfire evacuation, or a personal crisis such as health issues requiring hospitalization, financial crisis or any situation that results in risk of permanent separation. In order to also help proactively manage pet overpopulation, we have begun offering spay and neuter sponsorships. In the first eight months of 2024 we reached our annual goal for 100. We are now fundraising to continue offering these sponsorships, extending from Kamloops to more rural surrounding locations.
We are a Registered Charity and our stated purpose is:
“To promote the welfare of animals for the benefit of the public
by operating a pet food bank and providing necessary veterinary
care for the pets of who are homeless or in financial need”
and
“To undertake activities ancillary and incidental to the
above-mentioned charitable
purpose.”
(Registration # 779240712 RR 0001)
We have two primary community services:
1) a weekly food bank for companion animals
2) help with veterinary care
We sometimes offer a third service with emergency foster care.
As families are facing increasing cost of living, and there is a
concurrent pet overpopulation crisis, we decided we needed to set a
priority to helping families access spay and neuter surgeries. As of
August 21st, 2024, we have provided 100 Spay and Neuter Sponsorships
in partnership with our donors and veterinary clinics. These
sponsorships brought a deep sense of relief to pet guardians who were
worried about their pets contributing to overpopulation, but who could
not afford the cost of spay and neuter after their increasing rent and
food bills. In many cases families did contribute to the cost, which
is helping us offer additional sponsorships now that we completed our
first goal.
Having completed 100 sponsorships, with incredible support from
donors, partners, and veterinary clinics and distributors, we are
clear that these sponsorships are key for low income families to
attain veterinary care during increasing cost of living. Larger
percentages of income are now going to cover basic costs of living,
namely rent and food. Rather than have families give up their beloved
pets, while we are also facing a crisis in pet shelters, we would much
prefer to help keeps pets in their homes.
