The Problem
We are seeing more kids at Pathstone who are struggling with Anxiety, especially in those who are 10 and under.
Children worry, and they feel alone with their worries .
When children are anxious, it can be difficult for them to articulate exactly what’s happening to them. It will be clear that something isn’t quite right, but it might not be as obvious that anxiety is behind it.
Here are some of the things kids might say when they’re feeling anxious.
- My tummy hurts.
- I’m not hungry.
- I don’t want to go to school.
- Anything angry.
- I feel really sad, and I don’t know why. (Or just tears…lots of tears)
- But what if…what if…what if…
- I need to pee…again.
- I can’t sleep.
- But I don’t want to sit still.
- But I can’t do it!
- I want to stay with you.
- I’m tired.
- Nobody wants to play with me.
The Solution
Children are far more likely to grow into their fears than out of them if anxiety is not addressed – and at Pathstone, we know that treatment works!
Our therapists use things like fidget spinners, and other coping tools to support their therapy. Through these tools, kids are shown how to disarm their own worries or encouraged to discover their own ways to do so.
For the younger kids, Pathstone has invited back their blue and furry friend to help them learn to cope with their anxiety and fears!
Meet our Very Hungry Worry Monster
This cute, blue, plush toy eats worries for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between. Kids at Pathstone who are struggling with Anxiety will get one of their own; they can write down their worries, put them in the Worry Monster’s mouth, and zip it shut!
When kids come to visit their Pathstone therapist, they will bring their Very Hungry Worry Monster along with them and share their worries inside. That’s when the healing can begin.
NEW! The MOOD-O-METER.
The friendly Worry Monsters gobble worries up, it’s true. But did you know, these monsters have a lot of feelings too? Explore emotions with the friendly Worry Monsters in this board book, with a mood-o-meter dial to twist and turn throughout! Interactive pages, playful text, and a fun dial to spin combine to help little ones recognize and understand their feelings, as well as the feelings of those around them.
