5 Days for the Homeless (5 Days) is a campaign that strives to raise awareness and donations for members of society that are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. It takes place over a 5 day and night period throughout the month of March at various universities across Canada.
Our mission is to get students and local communities engaged in raising awareness and donations for homelessness through an annual week-long campaign. 5 Days is run by the Canadian Association of Business Students (CABS). 5 Days was acquired in 2019, working with member schools and participating schools to oversee the national campaign and provide support for local campaigns across North America.
Founded in 2005 by students from the University of Alberta, the campaign started with the idea of university students stimulating the experience of homelessness to raise money and awareness for a local partner charity. Today, the campaign takes on many different forms, with participating schools launching their campaign during the month of March every year.
The original idea of the campaign included participants who would
agree to go 5 days without personal comforts that are often taken for
granted, such as access to showers, basic hygiene products, a warm bed
or food. These students have no source of income throughout the
week and must rely on family, friends and strangers to donate these
necessities. Additionally, the students are expected to attend all
classes and write scheduled examinations. Since the
creation of 5
Days, the role of participants varies from school to school. The
campaign also encourages faculty, administration and even local
celebrities and political
figures to join us in our venture and
they have been extremely receptive to the invitation; challenging
students to raise funds for each night they spend outdoors. In past
years, notables like George Laraque, Justin Trudeau and Denis Coderre
and other local radio, TV and municipal figures have joined the 5 Days
participants for a full night on the streets.
5 Days for the Homeless helps to raise funds for many deserving
organizations and to provide education to students about the severity
of homelessness, especially among youth. This event is meant to show
that homelessness is not always a choice but a matter of circumstance,
and anyone could end up without a place to call home. It also places
emphasis on the need for organizations that aim to educate communities
across Canada and help those struggling with
homelessness.
