Pathstone Mental Health Foundation hasn't added a story.
Welcome to Pathstone’s Second POP-Up Project.
'Getting to the HEART of Eating Disorders'
On this page,
- You will learn more about the eating disorder support program we want to bring to life, but can only achieve, with your help.
- You will hear from Danielle Gaio, who shares via video, the story of her teenage years while battling an eating disorder, and what changed her outlook.
- You will learn more about why kids are struggling this way and how the pandemic has played a role.
The Problem
Over the past 16 months, the pandemic has created a tremendous amount of stress for many people, especially teens, who have a lot going on in their minds and in their changing bodies. With added stress, anxiety, and depression some teens have developed an eating disorder as a way to cope. It offers them a form of control at a time when there isn’t much.
At Pathstone, we have seen a 90% increase in eating disorder cases.
In just 30 days, we received 65 new cases of teens who were reaching out for our help.
Did You Know?
- Eating disorders are a serious mental illness, it’s really NOT about food.
- They have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disease.
- The long-term effects are permanent and include, heart problems, dehydration, malnutrition, loss in bone density, slowed brain function, and digestive issues.
- Eating disorders are actually more common in those who already struggle with depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Those who struggle may also have low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy, trouble coping with or expressing emotions, perfectionism, and impulsivity.
The Solution
At Pathstone, our counselors support kids who are suffering from anxiety, depression, OCD, and other mental health issues that drive eating disorders. Our work helps protect the wonderful hearts in people like Danielle in our video.
But eating disorders require a unique treatment plan.
We will work with young people, to look at what led to the eating disorder, not just the eating disorder itself. This requires Family-Based Treatment (FBT) training for 14 full-time Pathstone staff. This training will enable our team to confidently support and treat youth through in-person therapy, complemented by a qualified dietician who will guide, and stay connected with each young person our team is seeing. This is not a program that receives government support.
About the Training:
This training program is the ONLY Evidence-Based Treatment training program to treat eating disorders in teens. It is considered to be the gold standard in care. Completion of this program by our team will allow us to see and treat 125+ eating disorder cases each year.
The Reality
We don’t have the funds to support this many kids. This is why we are asking for your help.
How You Can Help
These teens need you. Their hearts need you.
With your help, we can provide more of our counselors with the specialized training they need to properly treat teens with eating disorders.
For the next 15 days, we are asking you to support dozens of young people who have already decided to not suffer in silence.
Your support today means that a teenager in Niagara struggling with an eating disorder can get the mental health help and nutritional support they need, immediately.
Our promise to you is that we will keep you updated every step of the way.
